Planned Would it possible to add more gender options to our profiles?

I know I could just leave it blank, but my gender isn't male or female or nothing. I would love to see this and other more trans positive stuff on the site. Maybe it could be a fill in the blank instead of a drop down menu?

Sorry, I posted this in general before finding the suggestions section.

I see this has only a few likes, but can I just say that making this a welcoming place to non cis people shouldn't be a popularity contest? This could be an easy fix and it should be fixed without the need for votes or debate.

I understand that there are all sorts of suggestions to sort through and prioritize, but I also think some problems can just be addressed as soon as they are acknowledged. I would hope that it's pretty self evident why a gender binary option that uses terms more fitting to describe sex is a problem, but I don't mind explaining why futher if it means it might get fixed.

Agreed. It doesn't even have to be a dropdown menu either. People can totally just write-in genders.

I say this as a man who is not 100% cis himself.

Definitely agree! Soon as we can make that big group of people feel more comfortable and welcomed, the better. I will just add that this community is very supportive though, and if it takes a while to get implemented, it's not because people are being malicious or mean or anything like that! Getting five likes for a suggestion on the forum is actually the higher end of what you can expect, and two of those likes (gene.sis and insertnamehere) are from site mods. I think that there are some other mods, but I've never actually seen 'em, so I don't think they're super present at the moment or have been for at least the last year or so.

The site also is a really small project that I think only has one programmer (the admin Friedman) who works a full-time job because all of the money from the patreon goes to keeping the site up and to small community paying systems meant to keep the community healthy, like where patrons can request a specific story to be continued and the author that does it gets some money for each chapter, instead of going into his bank account. He's been working on the next version of chyoa for a while, which has a bunch of features planned and made, but he can only do it in his free time.

What I'm saying is, we're with ya all the way! I really hope this can be implemented soon too, but if it takes a bit, please don't think that means you're not welcome or that people don't want you to be comfortable here. You're very welcome to be here! It's just that updates to the site are slow-going. Hope the change comes quickly!

    ^ Yes, pretty much.

This thread is actually the third most popular suggestion made in the past year - suggestions naturally amass more likes over time - but still, I doubt Friedman's even seen it. I agree that it would be both trivial and useful, at least as far as I can see. You could message Friedman directly and link this thread if you want to put it on his radar.

Thanks for the responses. I messaged Friedman and we'll see where it goes from here. It's nice to have support in the mean time.

    "Real gender"?

    Really..?

Don't complain to me. I didn't create it. My friend did. I just copied what she had made. Complain to her if you want to.

It's impossible to change "Field ID:" once it's entered.

She did change "Title:", what you see, to "Born Gender" when someone pointed that out to her.

We both know I don't know your friend. You presented this so own up to it or retract it.

And all you're doing is diverting from the clear solution is to switch the Gender option to a text box or add an Other option in the drop-down, allowing for a text box. Adding in an essentialist gender option is not a feature anyone requested because it's not actually of any use.

Wow. You sure are being hostile. What crawled up your *** and died?

Besides, wasn't it you who said "Agreed. It doesn't even have to be a dropdown menu either. People can totally just write-in genders.".

Well, just add the "Preferred Gender" field to "Custom User Fields" and you've got what you wanted.

Hey, c'mon, you don't needa start saying stuff like that. I'm pretty sure all that happened here is that there's been a misunderstanding -- what's bein' requested here is to change the Gender entry thing so that people can put in whatever they want (or at least to add a third non-binary option), not to add an extra thing to the menu and make a split between Birth Gender and Preferred Gender that would only make people feel less at home here and doesn't really serve much of a purpose. We don't write our blood types or eye colours into those fields, ya know?

It also wasn't asking "How can this be done", because the site actually already has programmers working on it. Which is fortunate, because building something like this out of just good samaritan forum responses would take a very very long time.

I don't really think DeviantChap was being that hostile, but he maybe might've been a bit on the defence from of the implications of you suggesting Birth and Preferred Genders to be different fields in a setting that didn't mention it before. I know it was just because you misunderstood what was going on and were trying to help, so no worries there, but you can see how someone might take that as you trying to change the implementation so that it isolates trans and non-binary people. Of course, that's not what you were doing at all, you just made a mistake! And you even edited your first message to make it look less like that. But most of the time when you're talking to people, you've gotta respond as if they're not making mistakes, because assuming that they are and checking every time would make conversations take ages.

So yeh, thanks for the suggested way to help, and good on ya for going back and editing "Real Gender" to be "Birth Gender" in your first message! I think all that happened here is you were a bit mistaken about what this post was for. No need for hostility on either side from here! You just skim-read something and tried to help out with a message that happened to only sorta-apply, that's all.

I think there is a bit of a misunderstanding here with 'born gender' and 'preferred gender' as well. If I was born with a gender, it never matched the sex, not gender, I was assigned at birth. Gender queer isn't my 'preferred' gender. It is my gender, or at least the closest approximation of it.

When you use terms as if they are interchangeable, it's hard to know what you mean. I'm not trying to be hostile, but if you actually believe I was born a male, then I would consider that ignorant at best. I don't mean that as an attack, just that maybe you haven't learned about these concepts in depth yet.

    Ok.

It's just that I know about XenForo 1 forums. You can't change that field. Not without ripping the guts out of the forum code, and then repatching it. You do that... You might as well just create your own forum code instead. Far less work. Creating your own.

And I don't see how custom fields would be a bad idea since it'd provide options.

I'll be honest, I don't know what the fix is, but having multiple fields that separate birth or real gender from what someone identifies with will not solve the problem.

Again, without knowing how they'd code it, I would like a simple text field for gender.

Yeh, the text field is more what we're after -- we're also talking about the actual site right now, not this forum. It's good to know that both you and your friend are trying to help us out here, but again, the site does actually have a programmer who I'm sure knows how to use the fields he's already implemented and is capable of doing everything you're suggesting and more. What you typed out is pretty much the bare minimum he'd need to know how to do, and fairly basic compared to some of the other elements of the site.

Again, the complication came more from ya misunderstanding what we were asking for than anything else, and I get the sense that English might not be your first language which makes you come across more aggressive and patronising than you mean to, but we aren't looking for an answer as to how it could be done or a separate field. We're just suggesting (to trained programmers) a change that they could (and entirely understand how to) implement to make the site more welcoming to more users.

  17. Ariel Schnee

That's what I suggested, and showed how to do.

I thought you were talking about the forum. It's impossible to change the hardcoded gender question of the XenForo forum in "Personal Details". It only offers what it offers. It's also impossible to make it not show. Believe me. I know. Liananna tried for months to try and change it. Or make it go away. But, custom fields was the best she could do. I was just trying to help out.

Also, I think we have a different definition of gender. As far as I know, it means what you physically are. Liananna and I are both in our late forties. Maybe we're just a little behind the times. Maybe terms have changed, and we didn't realize it. Could you tell me what your definition of gender is?

It's the only solution she found for XenForo forums.

English is the only language I know. Good 'ol Louisiana English. It might not be the same as the rest of the US though.[/QUOTE]

I was not being aggressive, or patronizing. Are manners really so different in your region? Around here what I said would be considered polite.

Can't be done. Not with XenForo. The field is set as it is.

Look, I'm not sure how much more there is to talk about here -- you thought we were talking about the forums, and we weren't. Thanks lots for trying to help, but we were never looking for an answer as to how the coding could be done, and the answer you gave isn't even for the site we're talking about.

If you weren't trying to come across as patronising or aggressive, then that's rad as hell, and I hope none of us came across that way to you either. But that should be just about everything all resolved now, I hope, because I don't want this post to get bogged down with clutter that takes away from what we're actually asking for from the site's admins. Have a great rest of your day, and thanks again for comin' in and trying to lend a hand!

Good news! Friedman messaged me to say he likes the idea and will implement it. Thanks for the support, everyone.
