I understand competition with Lit, but I don't get how discord plays into this. a simple chat similar to pinterest or FB have would be great.
Any third party solutions are beyond our control and could be removed from service at any time. (Edit: sorry for the necropost but I only saw this question just now...)
I haven't looked into what hat plugins are around but I imagine that there are ones that have a TOS basically let you do what you want. Using a third party chat client and server code that you need to run on your own server is not the same as something like discord and you are very unlikely to have them taking it away from you. Worst case is they stop updating it.
Nowadays, most websites use a framework and a number of third-party plugins. So does CHYOA. They are licensed as open source, so if the original publisher would stop maintaining the project, you could fork and edit it as necessary. Though if a plugin is already integrated into your site, free of bugs and not lacking features, you probably wouldn't want to change anything, not even update it. And if really necessary, you could also replace it with a similar plugin. (In contrast to that, the forum is proprietary software.) So if you have an open source chat software which would be hosted on CHYOA's server, you mainly have to care about issues like bandwidth and moderation.
You are quite correct, I had not thought of the possibility of open source software, but let me ask you this: would that be any better than what Literotica has, which everyone apparently hates? (Not saying it's a horrible idea, it would still be a useful feature: just that if we go that route, Literotica can easily match us...)
Well, I'm not quite familiar with lit so I don't know the chat feature over there. So just from my limited knowledge, I'd say that the control panel looks neat while the rest of the site seems to be stuck in an older version.
Lits chat is very very very outdated. The big improvement they made was upping the number of people allowed in a room. The things that I listed in my first post are not beyond the realm of possibility to do. The thing is that the kind of software you could use come in two flavours, extendable and non-extendable. The extendable stuff you can pretty much bolt on whatever the hell you want whilst the other stuff you are pretty locked down. Even then they would still most likely have a better set of features than Lit. Of course, there is the challenge of letting people on lit know about it and drawing them away from lit and to here.
If users prefer one thing over the other, fine. But I don't think we should actively "draw" users away from lit. (Though I'm pretty sure that you would hear recommendations through the grapevine.)
Agreed, due to Friedman's wholesale import that started the site we're all on very shaky legal ground over here and Lit is much bigger and better funded.
Isn't this site inspected regularly to make certain it doesn't get shut down by some illegal postings? I'm not concerned by Lit having more money. At this point we are a tadpole and not considered a threat to Lit, but that can change. Can someone give a visual sense on how a messenger chat would work here?
Well you kind of need to have some kind of big initial push of "hey this is a thing now!" otherwise you end up with the death spiral of "no one knows about the chat so they don't go on it and because they don't go on it it is empty so no one chats and so no one has a reason to go on and so and so forth." So one way or the other you would need to do some advertising outside of the site itself to attract people to it.
From my experience, it is important to have at least one regular who is online "all" the time. All chat rooms I've been in so far died after this person was off for too long. So it would rather make sense to inform CHYOA user about it who could use it to collaborate on stories.
well it being on the site and being on the front page would be a pretty clear advertisement to users of the site. Moderation and stuff like that is really beyond the scope of what I am suggesting in that it is something to think about once you actually have a chat client in the first place.
Why don't you consider it gene.sis? Then you can look for others who are on all the time. I am with Nemo I too would be hesitant and likely flake eventually.
