How do I add variable names?

I apologize as I am sure this is answered somewhere, but I can't find it. I have tried typing in {first} as it appears to show on my edit page but it doesn't seem to work when I save it. I tried it with spaces between the brackets and word and that didn't work either. I'm on an android phone if that makes a difference.

It is described in the CHYOA Guide, chapters Create a Story 8 Immersion and Immersion Variables

In your published story, your immersion variables currently are
{first_name}
and
{sissy}

You can edit the immersion variables on the edit story page.
To get there, go to "My Stories," click the three dots beside the story, and choose Edit Story.
(Alternatively, you can go to your story's story map and replace the "map" in the address bar with "edit")

Please note: If you already used immersion variables in your chapters, a change on the Edit Story page won't change the existing chapters.
