Hi, everyone. Hoping to turn this topic into a discussion thread for my story, called "Copper Rocks". It tells the story of an 18-year-old boy named Logan Ravers, who's been back to his hometown of Copper Rocks for a year and now is on the last week of summer before his senior year starts. It deals with Logan and his group of outcast friends trying to find their place amongst other cliques, notably his cousin's popular one, and the town itself, as the Ravers family is the most important one in town and people usually expect great things from them. However, he's from an estranged branch of the family that was basically exiled before coming back to Copper Rocks, so he doesn't have the confidence that people would expect from a member of the Ravers family. You can expect a number of themes in this story, such as coming of age, teenage drama, internal growth, mysteries, romance, casual sex, incest, amidst other fun ones. It has a lot of ideas and adapted characters from older stories of mine, repurposed for this version. I've already posted 14 chapters and would love to see each and every one of you there checking it out and then maybe coming here to discuss it. The link for the story: Copper Rocks — CHYOA
Just wanted to say im really enjoying this story and look forward to what happens next. Also hope this forum idea works out
To start some discussion, I thought about sharing one of my plans for the story. I was developing the current story that takes place at the cabin, and I already had two other thread ideas lined up to write after I finished the current one. But, thinking about it a little bit, I realized that, if I changed a few things I had planned for the cabin thread, I could make the two other ideas be sequels of that thread. I thought it'll make for a better story, more well-built, if I can put it that way. The development of Logan through a longer period of time will be better. Not only that, but I thought about considering each "part" as a book, and each book would have the name of the girl with whom Logan gets involved more during it.
I'm not so sure about that. I feel like that might just cheapen any relationship that Logan would form in the early books
I think I've worded it badly. I meant that in each part/book of the story, he'd get involved a bit more closely with a different girl, but he wouldn't really get to form an official relationship with those girls, until the final one in the last part. I wish I could give a clearer example of this without entering spoilery territory, lol.
Yeah, kinda. The time he spends with those girls will be more like separate arcs where he'll undergo a different kind of character development in each one. Before he's ready for the final girl.
So is this going to be a slow burn kind of relationship or will he be playing the field so to speak until he get the right girl? just curious.
A little bit of both. He'll be getting involved with girls in semi-serious relationships, but neither of those relationships will last. Until the final girl, which will be just the right kind of girl for him.
Also, I think this might be the proper place for this now, but I added a bunch of new characters to the lists. Added Malcolm and Eleanora Ravers, then Audrey's family from Green Hills, a few football players I created, and a new teacher to the school. One thing I also did, I changed Leon's name to Ralph. The reason for this is that Leon evokes the idea of a lion, and that's something I want to be tied only to the Ravers family in the story. Maybe someday I'll re-use the Leon name for a Ravers.
That's a good question. I always tried to create characters to have a purpose in the story or having at least a scene in mind for them. Some of them, I've never ended up using as their scene would take place so deep in a thread, it was frustrating, lol. I think, for Copper Rocks, I removed characters that would be redundant or wouldn't have a purpose in the cast. As far as least favourite character goes, I think it'd be Shawn and Dylan. I don't really enjoy writing their scenes when I use them in threads, but it's necessary for the cast to have characters like them in it. Kurt used to slip into this kind of character, but now I'm trying to write him in a different way so he can be useful in a story. About regret, it isn't on Copper Rocks properly because I removed him from this version, but I think the one character I did have feelings of regret about creating is Zack, only because I couldn't see into the future, though, lol. He was a good character for the simple concept I had back when I created my first story and I had fun with him in the early At the Cabin years, but later on, he became more like a big obstacle to me on the moment that I decided to flesh out the town and its backstory, and saw that my main character had to be a Ravers for that vision to come true.
I'm in the preliminary stage of planning out my new story. With regards to the CR universe, what were the relationships of Paris with the Woodsens, specifically Hannah and Ashley? I can't imagine Hannah's teasing of Paris would play out the same, and especially how Taylor would react to it. It looks like Paris has been out for a long time, so the dynamics there would have to be a lot different between them vs Hannah/Zack.
It's not exactly like it was with Zack, but it's similar. Regarding Ashley and Paris, it's the same, they were childhood friends because of Monica/Sarah and Taylor/Hannah, then drifted apart due to different interests and personalities, but remained in contact. Ashley considers Paris and Chloe her friends. Regarding Paris and Hannah, Hannah's teasing is lighter and more implied than the full-on teasing she did with Zack in the older version. As for how Taylor reacts, she's annoyed because she knows that Paris might want a more serious thing with a girl and Hannah is only playing around. Regarding how Paris reacts to Hannah, she has a crush on her,but doesn't think something can actually happen.
Personally I like both Characters (Zack and Logan). But I definitely see them having very different roles in the story. I think Zack is great when you have a small group of teens or people. It's easy to relate to him. But when you try to expand the field/universe like involving the rest of the town, and businesses etc I find that young Zack just doesn't cut it that well. Even with an Older Zack I personally tend to see him more has a cop/detective or maybe a doctor, a likeable character but one that would not have much of an impact on the town unless maybe has chief of police... maybe. I think that if you are brining in a larger area like the town, and politics and business then you need a more mature character for that or more connected to the history of the place. From the start I always saw Logan as more mature than the rest of the teens, Like an even more worldly and grounded Heather without the bossy attitude. And so he fits better with the large playing field. I also saw his evolvement with a MILF (or older girl) more likely/believable than I would with Zack. Personally I think Logan would work better with another circle of people/teens that the ones normally mixed with Zack. Except Heather, she fits right in with both characters.
Again personal take on the characters. I also think Hannah would tease Zack more than Paris for two reasons. Even though Hannah is Bi I've almost always seen her as being more interested in boys than girls, and also teasing boys could be more fun than teasing girls. I also think part of Hannah's teasing Zack is to also tease Taylor, sort of playfully get on her nerve.
That's kinda how I see it. The world/universe expanded too much from when I first created At the Cabin and for the kind of story I like to write, I need a character connected to the lore of the town. That character has to be a Ravers, so Logan was born. The earlier iterations of the character lacked depth, but if you take the current version of him, Copper Rocks Logan, someone has to be crazy if they say that he doesn't have depth. I'm giving Logan another circle of friends in Copper Rocks while still connected with Heather's group, but even Chloe and Paris' group will appear later on too. Yeah, Hannah's teasing also works to irritate Taylor too, and not forgetting that in Copper Rocks, Taylor still has a brother that Hannah also teases, Josh, who's the younger brother of Paris and Taylor. Though, since Paris is closer in age, Hannah's teasing focuses on her.
