I understand that some are married to the idea of dice rolling and creating some randomness and tension into the game that way. But it turns people off. :/
you could do what majus does for his black book game:give people like a small amount of points and some very basic stats everyone has one piont in and make the stats a chance out of success of 10
I find private rpg's tend to last longer in interest. The issue I find with public is you have all these people talking and waiting for long periods of time to talk. You really need a public RPG where interaction works even if it isn't your turn to talk. That's hard to do.
