Hi all. I'm Withness. I've been eyeing a public story with customization options and thinking of adding a chapter or two because I read the story with my variables in it and it was pretty hot. Hell it was hot without the variables. I wanted to add to the story as a "thank you" to the authors/contributors, but while poking around in other branches, I noticed some hiccups. Ideally, the story would have the character(s) name(s) throughout and all a reader had to do was plug in the desired variables on the side and name(s) should change automatically. In the story, I came across occasional instances of {first name} and the like and it kinda slowed the rhythm. Damn I'm long winded. Basically, when writing a chapter for a customizable story, do I just write it with the original character name and description and if someone adds their own variables, will it automatically match in my chapter, or do I have to write it with the variables in mind. "The boss enjoyed the sight of {first name}'s head bobbing in his lap, her silky {hair color} a delight as it rose and fell in time with her slurping." is doable, but I'd like to know how the system is supposed to work before I pitch in and possibly look like an idiot. Anyway, thanks for any insight anyone offers.
When adding a new chapter to the story you can see the variables on the right, such as: {first_name} {last_nane} and so on. That's what you need to use in the text of your chapter, and it needs to be exactly the same as what is shown there - for example {first_name} is different from {first name}.
Thanks for the reply, so a follow up. If the variables on the side say First Name: do I then just write it as First Name: ? I'm going to do some research for a couple of minutes, but thanks again.
You need to use the variable name enclosed in braces within the chapter text. The text which is shown beside the variable in the sidebar is information for authors and readers what will be defined by the variable. (The story owner could have defined a variable {m} which is quick to write but doesn't tell much about which name the variable should hold unless it is stated somewhere.) If you save a chapter as draft, you will see what others will see after the chapter is published.
Still fuzzy. I'll take a crack at a short chapter sometime this week and let the chips fall where they may. Thanks.
