The man glanced at her.

The man nodded his head.

"Sure miss. Hop on!" He called.

 

Note to self: Don't play with powers you have not properly trained. Crystal told herself after she successfully created the illusion to hide her real face.

“Thank you, I appreciate it.” Crystal quickly got on the hovercraft. “It's nice to meet a person who isn't a soldier. I guess you are a hunter?” She asked as she inclined her head toward the stuff on the vehicle.

 

(But Crystal will later gain bonus to xp in this ability~)

"Indeed. Kar Lik. A pleasure." He introduced himself. "And you? What brings you to this place? Are you one of those deserters, seeking to escape the war?"

 

“Nice to meet you, Kar, I am Ellis.” It was a fake name Crystal had used a few times back when she had been a regular thief. “And no, not a deserter. I am a tourist, actually. I wanted to visit the nearby city, since I heard good things about it... but got told that the city is currently closed to visitors. So I decided to explore this forest instead – not the most exciting thing to do, but it sure beats getting arrested on suspicion of spying, which is what happened to another tourist that was a bit too insistent on visiting the city...”

The man snorted.

"Hah! The city is locked down, since her majesty set a capital there. Also, foolish of you. The patrols might pick you up and throw to jail for suspicious activity." The man shooked his head as he looked forward.

 

“Suspicious activity? They would seriously arrest me just for wanting to visit the city? Guess I am lucky to have avoided that...” That patrol was not so lucky, but no need to mention that. “Well, seems like visiting the city is out of the question, then – unless I want to swim all the way, because that seems to me like the only option. If travel by foot is not allowed, then travel by boat is surely restricted as well... hopefully at least exploring this forest is allowed.” She finished with a chuckle.

 

"They don't really need a reason." The man shook his head. "They just like the power they have to take what they want." He explained. "Hah! Indeed the movement of boats on water is banned. Only military vessels can move around. As for forest... I would be careful. There are various patrols moving around, and without paperwork, well..." He shook his head.

 

“Sounds to me like if I want to visit the city, then either I join the local army or I sneak on some military vessel, if I can find a suitable one...” Crystal mused, then shook her head. “...Yeah, no. I'll go with option number three: Not visiting the city at all. It seems beautiful, as far as I can see from a distance, but it is not worth the trouble. Maybe I'll try again in a few years, when this mess is over...” She paused briefly, then looked at the man. “Say, have you visited the city? What does it look like? Any notable locations?” She asked, genuinely curious.

 

The man laughed.

"Sneak on the ship? Well, you would have very short life doing something like that." he shook his head.

"Ay, I was there. The city is beautiful, with many sculptures and fountains. You need to be rich to live there... or be a tourist." He chuckled. "There is the royal summer palace located in the center - the city itself was buil around 300years ago by Queen Tol IV. A wise queen, made this area thrive with building the city." He sighted.

 

“Sounds like a nice place... I hope it survives intact, so that I can visit it after the war is over...” Crystal sighed as well. “How did this stupid war start, anyway? I don't have a sister, but if I had one I can't imagine going to war with her...”

 

"As all civil wars in monarchies start. With a death of a queen. The previous monarch ruled the queendom for over 20 years. Thankfully, she did not have living siblings, so there was no civil war when she took the throne. Life was good during her rule. The taxes were not that high, the smiling Irek and his band were captured and executed just two years ago making roads safer. She arrived here, you know, to the city, on the festivals. We had more tourists then previous ten years. I remember screaming Long Live the queen! with my sister and our kids. The things were looking up for all of us. It seemed like stability and prosperity woud last for decades to come - the queen was not that old..." He explained, his eyes becoming vacant as he remembered the events.

 

Crystal nodded along, but did not interrupt, letting the man speak and making mental notes of anything of interest to her...

 

"Then her majesty, the queen, died in that shuttle crush... and all went to hell. And it started with that fool of a duke staking his claim or the throne! His was put down rather fast... but the forces that gathered... they did not disband. It did not take long to chaos ensue." The man shook his head sadly.

 

Well, this is certainly a different version than what I heard previously... “And the war has been going on ever since? I assume by now most of the weaker factions have been dealt with, one way or another... Any indication that one faction is winning? Or any attempts to negotiate a peace treaty between those that are left?”

 

"Some were destroyed, the smarter ones are sitting and waiting for their chance. A notable exception are the republicans. They say hat they have support of the republic - credits, equipment, advisors... some even think that republic sent a Jedi. Some nobles gave grand proclamations... but mostly sty out of sight. There were a couple conflicts between nobles, who see civil war as a chance to settle old scores. House Terambre was eradicated by their rivals. House Yer had to escape their lands and hide in forests when Prince took over their lands. But all of this seems like a silence before the storm. Things are balanced now... at least from what people talk. We are in for a long conflict, it seems." He paused. "Yes, House Kintar tried to make a peace conference. I don't know what happened, but all sides ended up escaping as the castle was blown up."

 

“I see... correct me if I'm wrong, but right now the two main contenders are the two sisters, with everyone else either supporting them or waiting for them to destroy each other, yes? Well, whatever happens I hope the war ends without too many more casualties...” Crystal meant it – dead people were of no use to her and the rest of the council, after all. Then a random idea came to her. “Say, are there any other notable tourist attractions? Preferably ones that are actually open to tourists. Since the city will remain closed to visitors for a long time I might as well go somewhere else...”

 

The man snorted.

"Yeah, the two Queens are the major forces... the others are just waiting for them to bleed each other out. Then I suspect, they will pounce on the weakened winner." He shook his head with a heavy sight. He then thought for a moment. "Well, I would discard the attractions in the cities - most of the cities will be under military jurisdiction now. There are some nature parks or old ruins that are worth checking out. Really beautiful waterfalls-" He paused and suddenly raised his hand to quiet Crystal. "Hush." He slowly picked up the slug rifle and jumped from the hover vehicle. Then he started slowly sneaking to the side, with his weapon prepared to fire.

 

Crystal wanted to ask a question, but instead just nodded silently, letting the man do his thing. She just stood there without moving, observing him... and silently used the force to check for any danger – she did not want to get surprised by an enemy, be it man or beast.

 

Crystal did not feel any danger. The man disappeared into the forest. Then, for a long time, nothing happened.

Brugh!

The sound of slugger resounded around the the forest. After a coupled of moments, the hunter returned.

"I got myself a nice one!" He said as he hopped onto the vehicle. He started it and change the curse.

 

“Great job! I hope the rest of your hunt goes just as well!” Crystal congratulated the hunter. “So, what were you saying? Something about parks and old ruins...” The latter, in particular, was of interest to her.
