Well, in a way. The language of the contest story will be set to German, so any update will appear in the given search link anyway. Maybe the general announcement could be put at the top of German stories' chapters instead of at the top of the main page. That way, it would reach both writers and readers of German content and would not appear for users who aren't interested in German content. I'm not sure whether we can do that, though. We had two judges last year and used Likes as well. (I think we used an average for stories with multiple chapters.) The issue with Likes is that it doesn't really measure how good a story is, but rather how popular it is. It is also more likely that a popular author gets more Likes than an unknown author, as users might read the content of the popular one but not the content of the unknown one. (In general, I would prefer a different rating system where Likes are divided by Unique User Views.) So I would prefer having judges only. (Two or more.) They also don't have to be permanent. If someone does it this year doesn't mean they have to do it next year. And if someone is a judge now, it doesn't mean they couldn't participate in a future contest as an author. Maybe ask possible candidates directly through direct messages. There might be users who think they are not qualified to do the job and therefore won't react. Besides authors, I could very well imagine users who provide feedback in comments (I know that's rather rare.) As soon as we have a second judge, I'm good to go. As for participants, I thought about some things that could be done. For example, the time limit could be variable, like one or two months after ten authors have submitted the minimum amount of words.
That all sounds good to me. What I'm wondering is: as site administrators, do you have any way of evaluating the views and likes? And also the number of words per story? I'm not very well versed in this technical stuff. And counting and calculating everything manually seems like a lot of work to me.
Well, I'm a moderator, not an administrator. Friedman is the site admin. He has direct access to the database and could do a database query to get Likes as the number is already stored in the database. Though doing that manually probably doesn't take much more time. The views that are shown on the site aren't really useful. A chapter gets a View every time the chapter is opened by anyone or anything. (E.g. readers (logged in or not), web crawlers, or the author.) So if you have a hub chapter in a game story, it might have way more views than its options. Unique User Views would mean that only the views of logged-in users are counted, and if that user visits a chapter multiple times, they don't increase the number of Views after their first visit. (The information to calculate Unique User Views is in the database, but we don't calculate the number yet.) For words per chapter, I copied each contest chapter to another site and noted the number of words in a spreadsheet. (In the future, there might be a feature that counts the number of words while you write in a chapter and also when the chapter is saved.)
Thanks for the explanation, I have a vague idea of what that means. So, honest thanks. As for the contest, there doesn't seem to be much interest. But that doesn't mean we have to give up on the idea. Maybe things will change over time. In any case, I'm in.
Das mit dem ".... es gibt kein großes Interesse" glaube ich nicht. Ich denk eher, die meisten wissen einfach nichts davon. Wenn ein Contest erst einmal da ist, müssen alle, auch die stillen Leser einfach damit konfrontiert werden. Vielleicht ändern ja einige dabei auch ihre Einstellung und sind in Zukunft nicht mehr so still. Also: Immer positiv denken!
Well, I'd be fine starting as soon as we have a second judge. I feel that participation won't be an issue when using a flexible time frame for the contest. I didn't think about that in the beginning.

Damit erreichen wir dann nicht nur die derzeit aktiven Autoren, die @Daemony anschreibt, sondern auch die Leser, die bewusst nur nach deutschen Inhalten suchen. Ich mache die Story gleich PUBLIC und wenn wir dann alle fleißig Updates schreiben, bleibt sie auch immer schön unter den aktuellen Suchergebnissen
Hallo Leute, Daemony war so freundlich mich anzuschreiben: ich hätte prinzipiell Interesse, am Contest teilzunehmen. Hätte dazu einige Fragen: gibt es dazu eine Themen-Vorgabe, zu der man eine passende, neue Geschichte erfinden soll? Wenn ja, wie lang hätte man dazu Zeit? Oder eine bereits bestehende Geschichte einreichen? Wie läuft das Ganze ab?

Ich habe dieses Jahr am englischen Wettbewerb teilgenommen und da war es so, dass zu Beginn ein Thema vorgegeben wurde, und zwar (hier übersetzt): KURZE BEGEGNUNGEN Eine Flamme, die doppelt so heiß brennt, aber nur halb so lange, hat einen besonderen Reiz, und ich möchte alles über Ihre Erfahrungen hören. One-Night-Stands, erste Dates, das ungezwungene Flirten, aus dem mehr wird, oder endlich den Mut aufzubringen, jemanden anzusprechen, den man schon lange von der anderen Seite der Bar bewundert. Außerdem gab es eine Längenbegrenzung (1000 - 7500 Worte). Alles andere war offen, Genre, Stil, Charaktere, ... Ja, eine Zeitbegrenzung gab es natürlich auch, die aber nicht sehr streng war. Und gene.sis, der die Idee hier ins Forum trug, meint auch, dass wir fexibel bleiben sollten, um möglichst vielen Teilnehmern eine Chance zu geben.
Hallo @studium, danke für deine Antwort. Für einen Wettbewerb sollen neue Geschichten geschrieben werden, damit alle Autoren dieselben Chancen haben. Andernfalls wären bekannte/beliebte Autoren möglicherweise im Vorteil. Wie findest du das?

@Papas_Liebling: danke für den Link. Die Regeln sind absolut nachvollziehbar und der Zeitraum von einem Monat ist meiner Meinung nach genau passend. Aktuell ist bei uns (Süddeutschland) noch Ferienzeit und manche sind verreist, daher am besten so ab September/Mitte September starten und dann freue ich mich schon jetzt auf das Thema

Klingt genau nach mir, ich würde gerne einen Richter abgeben, um den Inhalt, den Ausdruck und den Aufbau zu würdigen. Ich schreibe selber schon sehr lange und habe hier ein gutes Zuhause für meine Lesesucht gefunden. Also Judge Ich wäre dabei.
Ich bin dabei. Würde schrieben, aber wenn ihr noch einen Juror braucht wäre ich auch dafür zu haben. Wir sollten zusehen die Werbung auch in den anderen großen deutschen Foren, in denn Geschichten veröffentlicht werden zu betreiben.
Diese Werbung sollten dann wohl am besten User übernehmen, die in diesen Foren aktiv sind. Dazu gehöre ich leider nicht. Aber meine Mailing-Aktion hat auch einige Antworten gebracht, die nicht hier im Forum eingetragen wurden. Als Juror mitzumachen könnten sich zusätzlich @BestBoy und @SmartWriter vorstellen.

Due to the holiday season in Germany, it has been suggested that the competition should start in mid-September at the earliest. I would support this. But I assume that some preparations still need to be made?
