It should be possible to change the Story Mode on the Edit Story page. As you're not the original owner, you can only access it with the direct link. The easiest way is to go to the story map and replace the "map" in the address bar with "edit"

Hey, I have a story I’m no longer active on, and I think there is someone that would interested in adopting it. Is there a way to directly transfer ownership or do I have to put it up for adoption and then they adopt it ?
You can assign User Roles to other users on the Edit Story page. (You might want to ask the user before doing that.) Also see Create/Edit a Story
