I'm skeptic, but maybe you're right and i don't see much harm in it.
 
I recently published a chapter in which I (apparently) killed off two major story characters. I received a comment along the lines of "No, they can't possibly be dead!" That was very gratifying-- the reader felt such a connection to my writing that they felt compelled to comment.
