One and three for me. I definitely can get behind the, you fucks gave me a bunch of favorites but not a single like, enjoy the story not getting continued kind of spite. Of course I try to be better then that (for the most part) Three is definitely frustrating, I tend to write a lot of chapter in advance, so I am always looking forward when it comes to drop the big one...only to get sorely disappointed lol By the way, one thing that is surprisingly effective, even though it absolutely should not be is...changing your cover image. The moment I did it for my recent story I get a bunch of new readers and likes
1 and 3, although 1 is because LLNO has a "like" threshold for new chapters on a given branch. And once I finish LLNO, the next story is going to be MUCH more self-contained and not driven by likes.
Option D: What if no one wants to add to my story, then I get a new job and end up with 3 years of writer's block? Better write another 250 chapters before publication, just to be safe.
Definitely 3 for me. I get that I can't control it, but it is a shame to feel like you were letting lightning out of a bottle only to see a muted response. Of course, if we're being honest, sometimes I have the opposite, releasing a chapter that I feel like isn't my "A game" only to see it rake in likes compared to the chapter I thought was dynamite. Don't they understand that other chapter was the whole reason I wrote the story?!
I've had 2 when I was involved in a collab situation and the other author checked out for whatever reason. But I think I've only had like 2 or 3 chapters ever posted to my branches by folks outside of that scenario, so I certainly can't wait on it.
I guess if you get 100 people reading chapter 20, they must have liked chapters 1 to 19 enough to move on but are just too thoughtless to click a thumbs up button, but hey, I still want the likes.
I love it when someone comes in and drops a dissertation in the comments, detailing what they think about each character and trying to figure out what is coming next. Just an absolute essay. Makes me feel cooler than a like.
I only just started writing recently. But so far, I'm not ready to open my story to other authors. Might make me selfish or alienate some folks -- neither of which is intentional. It's just the way I'm working right now. And of course I like likes. But I kind of hate that I get this little adrenaline rush when I log in and see 20 notifications ... ooh, 20 people liked my chapters! Or ... ooh, one person like 20 of my chapters! Right now, at least, I'm enjoying my stories. So likes or not, I'm (mostly) having a good time exploring these adventures.
