Thousands of years ago, sorcerers used dark magics, creating horrible creatures to do their bidding. At first, these magicians simply fought amongst themselves for power and glory, but they soon learned that they were not, in fact, creating these monstrous beings. Instead, the mages were calling them, and some of those who were called did not readily obey their new masters. Towns were leveled and razed as the arrogant magicians frantically sought a way to combat their mistakes. After years of searching, the sorcerers created cards. Cards which were capable of sealing and binding spirits such that they had no choice but to follow their masters' commands. Spirits were sealed within these cards, brimming with power. Now, thousands of years later, a relatively new card game has swept across the globe. Though only a few years old, a burgeoning profession circuit has already been founded, and the game, called Duel Monsters, is rapidly becoming one of the most played, viewed, and talked about sports in most countries. The worldwide phenomenon traces its roots to Domino City, Japan, where the scene is especially competitive. A new university founded upon the promise of emphasizing the instruction of Duel Monsters has just completed construction and is accepting applications for students, professors, and faculty for their inaugural school year. Now that I'm feeling a little more comfortable here, I'd like to try running a game I've been tossing around in my head for a few weeks now. No familiarity with the Yu Gi Oh setting or the irl card game is necessary! As with other RPs here, die rolls with d100s will be the primary means of determining how characters' actions play out, including during matches of Duel Monsters. These matches, called duels, will function in a similar manner to extended checks; multiple rolls will be necessary from both participants (and potentially from outside actors, depending on circumstances) to shape the course of the duel over time. Player characters could be anything from students at the new university who are learning Duel Monsters for the first time, to professors of the game instructing said pupils, to seasoned veterans on the professional circuit, or even spirits, whether bound or free-willed, of the type mentioned in the introduction. Does anyone have any questions, concerns, interest, or other thoughts?
Depends on the circumstances. It wouldn't be unheard of, but it would be a wager added on to a duel, not an inherent part of the normal rules. However, in shadow games, if you're familiar with them, anything goes. There may be other magics which could have similar effects as well.
I do like me some YGO, so I might give this a shot depending on if I can think of a character and when we see what the format of character creation is.
I need to think on what I want to do. Would duel spirits be canon cards or otherwise? I don't know what system you have in mind to how it would work.
Either is fine. You could play a spirit inhabiting a canon card, or make a custom one based on the spirit. For anyone interested in playing as a spirit, you won't be limited to just chilling in your card. Powerful duel spirits (which player-character duel spirits would have to be in order to be fun) are more than capable of manifesting physically. Plus, there's the spirit world. I should probably be able to have a character creation thread up on Friday or Saturday, depending on my workload for the rest of the week.
