It has probably already been suggested, but two "simple" things like these would be pretty useful:

    - A "favourite author" list for every user
    - A better way to see how much your story if followed is the "number of bookmarks" count, in my opinion.

    bye

    edit:

    - also provide some rules for linking to images wouldn't be so bad. For example allow uploading only on certain sites (i.e. imgur), and limit it to maximum 2 links (pictures) per page.

Don't know if this has been suggested or not, but if it has just treat this as a +1.

Branching is nice, and it's how MOST CHYOA story's work, but something that I find sorely lacking is the ability to UN-Branch. Especially right at the start of the story there are situations where you want to be able to have several pages that you can go from 1 to another and back round again: such as 'Take stock of your gear', 'consider your options', and then having done both of those move on to actually making your decision about which option is best... Also there comes a point later in the story that I am working on where if you have not utterly fucked up all your decisions up to that point lead to the same place: The General is dead and you are now in charge of the colony...

Simon, you can use thread linking to merge two streams of threads into one. Look here: http://forum.chyoa.com/threads/two-questions-thread-linking-notification-about-comments.16/

    SEE CHYOA GUIDE
On the front page, at the bottom of the right column. There is a machina guide for most of the markdown text. The only one I have found missing is the text for embedding, leached images from free photo album websites. Such as Imgur, but there are many others equally as good.

Whenever someone has the time to add a button that makes it 'easier' to link threads, I agree that will be awesome. As it is, I found a somewhat difficult and indirect way to get a thread's number. For those who want to spend less time finding a way to post something and more time writing, or doing other things, I believe that would be wonderstrukk. :D

    EMBEDDING IMAGES GUIDE
A guide for doing that written by someone else, of that I am unaware.:)

It would be nice if a quickie formatting legend was at the bottom of the Edit Thread page.

Even *emphasis*, **strong emphasis**; start line to get: 1. numbered list, * bullet list, > indented paragraph.

I'll have to see if the indent blockquote directive works. It looks like the "code block" directive does (4-space indent), though mostly to bad effect where I've seen it.

    I use or
    "spoken word"
    *thoughts* <-- \*thoughts\*
    *thoughts* <-- _\*thoughts\*_

so _ does the same as * and \ can be used to use the special characters

Some people have been talking about the relative lack of trafic on this site and I have a small but perhaps helpful suggestion: an area of the forum where you can post personal adds. I know there are a lot of sites where you can do that and they get a lot of traffic, so perhaps that would boost our numbers? (Though of course also increasing server load a lot, such is life...)

Doesn't the Internet have enough Facebooks? Shifting the focus on the site won't necessarily bring traffic to the areas which need it--it'll just shift the focus of the site. The major problem with why Literotica failed on such an epic scale was exactly because of the clientelle it catered to--racist trolls who sit around playing forum word games while arguing about Barack Obama and some article they read in Intelligentsia Aficianado on a website that caters to writing masturbatory aid material. We should be proud (but not prideful) of what we've got here. It's important for visitors to connect, but they should put their money where their mouth is, not show off by boasting. I suppose it can't be helped, however--it's a very strange culture that metastasized the internet after its formative generation.

The internet is the world's first exercise in GLOBAL true, as opposed to representative, democracy: and what we have learned from it is there is a good reason that no culture in history has EVER had a fully inclusive true democracy: namely, the majority of people in the world are immature 'basic' dumb-asses who wouldn't know culture and reason from a hole in the ground if it stood up on it's hind legs and bit them on the ass!

However, I would not say that Literotica has 'failed': in fact quite the inverse! They run monthly or even more frequent contests for the best content which pay out CASH to their winners: are WE in a position to do that? Can we boast over 100 pages of new content daily? Can we claim even one TENTH the average quality of content that they can? Does CHYOA have an geographical feature named after it on the map of human sexuality... Humm?

No, no, no, and no: so I would argue that it is we who are failing and they who are succeeding: and if part of that is that they serve as a place which people can go to hook up with individuals sharing their sexual proclivities, why should we not steal that ingredient for ourselves: humm?

Is this, like a spambot thing, or are there supposed to be more colors or what am I looking at here?

If people want cash, that's what jobs are for.

What you are looking at here is a malfunction: I would suggest that you run your antivirus program, I wrote it in normal black and white and if it is coming up for you the way you have quoted it there is something intensely WRONG with your machine.

However, in response to your statement: Writing, at least writing content worth publishing, IS a 'Job': and those whom are good enough at it to do it to the standards to which we all should hope to aspire, be it via a native talent for it or a great deal of training and polishing of their style, usually both: expect to get paid for it in some way: either with fame, praise, or cash on the barrel-head. We can offer praise and some small degree of fame: but as the saying goes 'love wont pay the rent'. For myself I am fortunate enough to at the moment be in a position where I don't have to worry about holding a job to be able to eat and have a roof over my head, freeing me to write decent though not exceptional content and help others do so as well, but many or in fact most people are NOT so fortunate, and this in turn means that we cannot attract writers of the highest of calibers unless they do it no in hope of reward and opportunity but because they are passionate about the work itself and have a story that can only be told in our unique medium.

Your argument appears to be that we should not change because the site is perfect as it stands, but that is based on the fallacy of perfection: nothing is perfect: there is always room for improvement, at least from someone's perspective: because what is 'perfection' to one person is anathema to another. We both agree that the site is GOOD as it stands: where we disagree is if adding a 'personals' section to the forums would improve it, I say, 'yea' and you 'nae' and I doubt ether will change their position: so let us cease batting this back and forth and await others expressing their opinions...

If you want more traffic, tell people about CHYOA. Changing what CHYOA is is much more likely to alienate existing writers and readers than to draw new readers.

Personally, I'm pretty pleased with the traffic, certainly compared to what I was seeing on the original CHYOO.

A few months back, I asked Friedman about getting Chyoa indexed to be easier to find, and if I recall correctly, it was better to wait a bit, maybe until after Chyoa 2 launched.

I have a new suggestion for the next version of Chyoa: the ability to combine both searching a category and 'Deepest Thread' or similar: such as finding the 'deepest thread' stories in 'Erotic Couplings' or the most recently updated stories in 'Non-English' and so on.

And if we are feeling ambitious allow you to combine that with searching for a tag as well such as 'Deepest Thread/Erotic Couplings/Pregnancy...

I also just thought of something that is missing from the 'RPG' section of the forums: an 'RPG Discussions' area, for people to talk about meta-plot and post announcements about the games and so forth which are neither 'Advertisement' nor 'Information'...

EDIT: Or was that what the 'RPG Information' area was intended for?
