I can relate. That happened with my Stanley Parable CHYOA I was trying to write. (It flowed so smoothly from basic priors, but it ended up a LOT darker than I wanted it to. Mostly because the characters are trapped between a Mind Control corporation and a petulant god, and then I threw workplace harassment and sexual double standards into the mix. In retrospect I'm not sure what I expected.)
Anyway, have you tried inventing characters who are less cruel?
Or, failing that, pitting the sadistic assholes against equally cruel characters, so that from the reader's perspective, they both read as Acceptable Targets who Deserve Each Other?
You should actually make a story called "Joke's on you, the rape is legalized," just make the introductory chapter, end it with the question "Who are you?" and then just make it public and walk away.
My personal favorite name for this holiday is Liar's Day, coined by Jerry Holkins of Penny Arcade fame way back in... 2005!?
That can't be right. MAN I feel old now. Imagine living in 2005. 2020 is still 15 years away, Covid hasn't been invented yet, we don't all have black rectangles in our pockets...
