    Building the Fiction Community

This is a really great idea, Friedman! Looking forward to being a part of this on the Authors’ side when it becomes available.

    Show locked choices?

This question is more for readers than authors, but I couldn’t figure out a good place to post it. Hopefully some of you authors are also readers ;) Do you prefer seeing locked choices, or would you rather have them hidden? I lean towards hiding them, but I started wondering recently if seeing...

Fantasy idea I'm halfway there on but could use some help with

That's a great breakdown, but the continent is made up of several nations, which will soon be in conflict with one another (like the Warring Kingdoms or Sengoku periods if you're familiar with those), so it would probably be more like picking a nation to follow, but your point is still valid in...

Fantasy idea I'm halfway there on but could use some help with

It does, thanks so much! I hadn't thought about having different faction routes, but that could give me considerable breathing room with character scenes. I'll throw that one into the wheel house and see what I can do with it. :D

Fantasy idea I'm halfway there on but could use some help with

Makes sense, I don't mind planning it out in that case. Good call. It's already going to be a pain for people having to navigate such a large story with game mode on, no need to make it worse

Fantasy idea I'm halfway there on but could use some help with

Hmm, so basically if I want to make it user friendly I need to plan out side chapters first? That's a bit unfortunate for bottom of the page navigation with the main chapters listed below any side chapters, but it looks like it might be necessary... Is the story map the primarily used method of...

Fantasy idea I'm halfway there on but could use some help with

Oh, huh. Never heard of Twine before. I'll look into that, it actually looks pretty cool. Thanks! That said, I fear I may have overstated my intentions by saying "dozens of hours" of side content. I should instead say that however many words make up the whole game/story, about 40% will be main...

Haha.... you may be right about that... but I suppose I'd like to try and fail than not try at all! :D

Fantasy idea I'm halfway there on but could use some help with

Hello, and hello again. A bit of a text wall incoming, but I hope you'll be kind enough to read it and offer suggestions. I have a fantasy idea I've posted about a couple times, and I really want to solidify a foundation for it because I've been wishy-washy on some details. I have sort of three...

    Info Dumps vs. Proper Nouns

Man you guys are a great resource. Thanks so much for the replies so far!

    Info Dumps vs. Proper Nouns

I'm pretty set on the Destyn terminology staying, as calling them Knights or Hand of the King doesn't ring true in this universe. Even somebody like a chambermaid can be a Destyn, so having a chambermaid be a maid and Hand of the King seems kinda strange since that term already has certain...

    Info Dumps vs. Proper Nouns

I do intend to have a glossary, but I don't want readers having to rely on referencing that. I see what you mean with the Jurassic Park comparison, and i'd like to avoid infodumping if possible as you recommended, because I have a nasty habit of relying on them that I'm trying to break. To...

    Info Dumps vs. Proper Nouns

I'm drafting a fantasy story (2nd POV) that uses a a fair few proper nouns, and I keep rewriting the first few pages because I can't decide how to handle them. Info dumps are, to be honest, the way that feels easiest/more natural for me as the writer to explain these proper nouns, but I know...

Which story would you be most likely to read? (Poll)

It’s probably best for keeping track of very long stories or stories with a lot of moving parts, because it caters to organizing things like characters and story details for ease of access, without having to flip through 100s of pages to recall a detail you forgot.

Thanks for your advice about writing. The video you linked was quite helpful too! And to address what I quoted you on, you’re quite right. I could have been clearer about this. The “visual novel” isn’t so visual after all. It would have no pictures/music/backlog/etc. Specifically what I had in...

Which story would you be most likely to read? (Poll)

I’ve been writing the three daughters story, but haven’t published it yet because I’m tinkering around with the variables. Hopefully that’ll go up sometime this month, and I’ll link it here. I could potentially be up for the collab. I read the first two chapters of Star Bound just now, and I...

Nice! Always cool to have more fantasy stories on the site. I use a software called Scrivener.

Which story would you be most likely to read? (Poll)

While I’m definitely an amateur writer by all accounts, I do take my writing seriously and put forth quite a bit of effort. I’m no Brandon Sanderson, Tolkien, or any of the other greats. Not even close, obviously lol (I assume one of your choices was the fantasy story?) but to what limited...

Which story would you be most likely to read? (Poll)

It'd be an entirely different story, but I wouldn't be against doing such a story in this setting, but with my own characters: A mysterious tree known as Yggdrasil would often appear in the world of the humans, releasing many small orbs into the human world. A small proportion of the orbs are...
