Are 'bad ends' (i.e., where you die) permitted?

Hi,

I'm in the early stages of writing a story with branches that are 'bad ends' wherein the reader's character dies, however I noticed in the official Chyoo Guide that "extreme violence during sex" is a theme that's banned!

Does this mean my story, and any other stories featuring bad ends, are not permitted?

This is the specific scene - in it, the character is killed during sex as the result of a poor decision, thus incurring the wrath of a particularly sadistic tentacle monster.

If this is unacceptable, is there any sort of alternative that is permitted which I might use instead to punish the reader's character for making bad decisions?

Thanks, and apologies if this is a silly question!

Bad ending are permitted and have been employed to some capacity. We seem to have developed a rule of intent: If the intent isn't sexual, then spare the grisly details. This doesn't mean remove all details, often times a description of a character's elation makes a normally violent act passable. Your thread is a prime example of this detail, it's meant to be painful and mean, but the protagonist's pleasure overrides the horrors of it. That said, the rule of intent still leaves a massive gray area.

Personally, I think you walked the line without crossing it, but I am interested to see what the rest of the community thinks.

I'd judge your thread as approaching the line but completely inside the Chyoo standards, much for the reasons Kaitou points out. The PoV character isn't experiencing it as fearful and cruel, so much as an overwhelming sensory experience.

It might be good to highlight the possibility of danger in the "About" text for the story. You could also tag the specific scene "erotic horror" to make it show up on the story, though tags are less easy to find when reading or browsing the story.

Hahah, to join the ranks of Jimi Hendrix, Bon Scott and John Bonham. Sorry just found it funny as all heck. Heheheh.

Hmm... The guidelines say: "Power plays and non-consent fantasies are one thing, but killing or or violently abusing (excessive violence) someone during a sexual act must be avoided." Which is a pity as it kinda limits the things that can happen in succubus/incubus stories (life draining for example) and the way I interpret it vore is right out.

Not that everyone likes those and there are different story sites that allow such but it is a pity since this is the best "choose your own adventure" style site I know so while I could write a more violent or deadly story elswhere I could not write it together with other writers and multiple paths such as I can do here.

Well, no matter. When I'm here I'll do my best to stick to the rules.

Ok guys this is how I interpreted that rule, for what is worth:

One, try not to write about a person killing another person in a brutal way, especially during sex. I guess you can understand why that's a bad thing to write and read.
Two, try to not exceed with brutal violence transforming an erotic themed site to a splatter\gore\violence themed site.

All the rest should be ok. Of course how well the "grey area" that remains is handled depends on you.
If the other moderators and Friedman agree with what I just wrote I can add it to the FAQ on the CY guide.

If that's the addition you're planning verbatim, I'd word the first one better and reverse the order. I think the primary focus of this rule should be that we're trying to keep the violence away from a Guinea Pig level and closer to extreme, even parody-level S/M. This would make the second rule much more important than the first, and should therefore be placed first.

As for the wording, even the thread that prompted this topic uses a brutal method to kill someone during sex, yet it's considered okay by the two of us who have weighed in. If no one who casts a vote disagrees, it demonstrates we're okay with brutality if the pleasure level overwhelms it. The wording of the top rule dismisses this consideration, or at best minimizes it with the word "try" and the whole second sentence.

Just my thoughts, feel free to disagree.

Uhm yeah, it's a difficult subject. I read the thread and not only I find it perfectly fine, but I noticed the author even warned the reader on the story description.
Tbh it doesn't belong in the rules (just a draft) I wrote because there's no brutal or too violent killing at all, but maybe there's a better way to define that rule:
- how much would you restrict violence and\or killing during sex?
If anyone has a good way to define such a rule, pls give it a try :)

I guess we're all ok with the second part (Two, try to not exceed with brutal violence transforming an erotic themed site to a splatter\gore\violence themed site). Do we want it as a general rule?

Planning a bad ending scene where a girl is killed by a vampire during sex. I'm not planning to go into graphic details, just show that during the scene this vampire that has been sealed in a cave with no food bites her, and then later this once shriveled vampire emerges from the cave looking like a twenty year old because he drained her. I was going to have him lament that he couldn't keep her as a playmate because his hunger had been too great, then move on.

would this be considered over the line if the sex scene ends as soon as he bites her and flashes to him exiting the cave? No details about how she dies or what his feeding does to her, just she got bit and now dead.

My personal view is that's fine, Fallen.

What I think needs to be avoided is the whole "I hacked off her head while screwing her twitching corpse" kind of stuff. That's...disturbing, in far more ways than one. Keeping issues like that out are definitely beneficial to this site and it's well-being.

It's probably something that can be looked into on a case-by-case basis. Though, Mr. B., I'd definitely be behind that kind of rule.

Ok I thought that part on "killing someone" was more confusing than anything else.
I changed that part form this:

  1. THEMES NOT ALLOWED: don't write on bestiality (see the Harkness test to see what's allowed), underage sex (younger than 18 years old), or extreme violence during sex. Power plays and non-consent fantasies are one thing, but killing or or violently abusing (excessive violence) someone during a sexual act must be avoided.
  2. Formatting: the text formatting allowed is listed in the dedicated thread of this guide.

to this:

  1. THEMES NOT ALLOWED: don't write on bestiality (see the Harkness test to see what's allowed), underage sex (younger than 18 years old), or extreme violence: power plays, non-consent fantasies and a reasonable amount of violence are perfectly fine but the rule below applies, especially during sex acts.
  2. Violence: as a general rule, try to not exceed with brutal violence transforming an erotic themed site to a splatter\gore\violence themed site.
  3. Formatting: the text formatting allowed is listed in the dedicated thread of this guide.
Let me know what you think, we can always change it :)

The wording in #2 is a bit awkward. How about something like: "Violence: as a general rule, try not to use an excessive amount of brutal violence; remember, this is an erotic-themed site, not a splatter/gore/violence-themed site."

Actually I'm planning similar bits with my story except that it's with people who are convinced vampires exist. I think death, as it is in many stories has to be allowed just no reveling in it. It has just come to my mind, although the series has a horror theme it was on BBC2 at 9 o'clock, that "The League of Gentleman" did a (dark dark) comedy sketch about auto-asphyxiation in which everybody died and was seen to have died, so if such things can occur in a relatively tame medium then surely just stay off descriptions of gore.
