It's quite possible. Any suggestions what calls should be supported?

API: Backing up the chapter content of a story, maybe by navigating links from a data-only story map.
API: (related) Fetching the (Markdown?) source of a chapter.

Aside from the API, better queries and results pages for navigating more chapters at once would be helpful to me personally. These are things I miss from Chyoo2.

    * Bigger query results pages to allow prolific/longtime authors a way to navigate to their older contributions. 10 results with previews is nice when you're already in the neighborhood; 50-100 results per page (with thread title, story title, chapter depth and date only) is more the way to allow browsing larger result sets.

    * List of all stories I've contributed threads to.

    * List of all the threads I've contributed to a given story.

I find the current site visually nice enough but difficult to work with when I want to page back through my earlier work (where "earlier" might be a contribution to someone else's story two weeks ago)

    Liking/disliking chapters

Fetching the source (in various markup/markdown formats) of chapters

Getting my notifications in a standard format (JSON/XML)

    Commenting on chapters

Getting the comments on a chapter in a standard format (JSON/XML)

Getting total chapter count and chapter depth of a story

Edit: Checking when/if a story/chapter has been updated

May I bump my question again?

I just recieved a bug report from a reader which made me aware that the current system is even less useful than I thought.

My story inculudes at the moment an incident that raises suspicion from the reader about the conspiracy that is unfolding around him. Readers who don't get to this chapter won't get suspicious (for the moment). At a later stage, when there is a second chance to become suspicious, I obviously needed to branch the path between those who are already suspicious and those who are not (yet). My initial thought was to do this with a simple "suspicious: √" for one chapter and "suspicious: x" for the other one.

But the "x" means that I would have had to define a "suspicious: x" earlier. As it it not defined, readers who are not suspicious can't choose any of the options.

There must be a way to introduce a variable that recognises "not defined" as "no", right?

Is there a way for me to see stories that uses that neat Score system?
If not then that would be on my top ten of things i wanna see... The other nine being also a way for me to see only stories who use the Score system.

Question, is chyoa open source/can I review and offer patches for the code?

You can now filter stories by immersion or score system. Use the search results filter or the following links directly:
    Customizable Stories: https://chyoa.com/customizable-sex-stories
    "Text Game" Stories: https://chyoa.com/adult-text-games

I have a simple suggestion: Under the Top Ten Stories (Front page, right column) could be a "More Stories" link to here: https://chyoa.com/search?q=&type=story&sort=rating&page=2 (That is a empy querry serach sorted by rating starting on page 2)

The Top Chapters part could also get a "More Chapters" link to here: https://chyoa.com/search?q=&type=chapter&sort=rating&page=2 (Same for Chapters)

This would not only make finding stories easier, it would also easily show new users that the search works without search text to filter all stories with the right column options like categories and language.

    +1 for API.
Basic stuff like calls to get site notifications and news would be great already.
Advanced stuff and even better is to get & edit chapter text & choices :D

Shouldn't the forum be using https? Because your forum password and chyoa password are the same isn't it pointless to use https on one but not the other?

I see the "top chapters" Counter has been changed and no longer includes introductions.

I think this is a good idea, although I was personally hoping to break into the top10 with my introduction soon and can bury that hope now.

It's a nice way of advertising certain parts of stories, especially in stories with 100+ or 1000+ chapters.

Can we get hidden values for the condition stuff please? Also can we get a option to turn it on by default when someone reads the story, with the option to turn it off though still.

Not to be weird about it, but where is the line drawn here?
Is it just restricted to explicit reference to a character being under 18, or does it also include implications or leaving the age unstated and ambiguous?
What about Fantasy scenarios, with, say, an elf who looks super young but is really 200 years old?
It´s just that for folks coming from the anime/hentai fandom, this question can be an issue, since they´re used to the more laissez-faire attitudes of Japanese culture (eg. Sailor Moon is 14)...

Unfortunately, the law isn't clear here.

Sex between or with characters under 18 isn't allowed, and it is preferable to mention the age.

If characters are fictional creatures, like elfs, a quick Harkness check is advisable: http://imgur.com/gallery/6jp4DVK (Intelligence, Communication, Sexual Maturity).

Btw: These rules are not CHYOA-specific but apply to most countries.

I'm interested in having an API implemented, especially so I can back up my stories.
Until this gets implemented officially, I wrote a web scraper that copies all the chapters in a story and saves it to disk as JSON and HTML files. The program is available on GitHub.
If there's more interest I can write a deserializer for it as well.

I have a suggestion that's been knocking around my brain for a few days: Now that we have awards on the main site and they link to the 'notable authors' page: there should be one or more awards for the number of times people 'favorite' your stories and another (or several) for bookmarking chapters, because I find a lot of the time people will do that but not vote for the chapters/stories in question.

In a related note: I think you should also have to up-vote at least one chapter in a story before you can favorite it: 'put your money where your mouth is' so to speak. (Full disclosure, this second change would not affect me in the slightest because I neither up-vote chapters nor, especially, favorite stories. Like Princess Lea I prefer to remain safely anonymous.)

Oh, something else that has been knocking about my brain for more than a month: what do people think about making a sister site, Maybe by changing this to chyoa.xxx and creating a new blank chyoa.com, which uses the same system architecture we have already developed but for 'family-friendly' chose your own adventure stories? Or perhaps parking it at "http://choseyourownadventure.com/" Which seems to be available, if you are willing to pay the minimum 90+$ to have Go-Daddy negotiate with the owner for you and can get it at a decent price. You could, with a little careful combing and reorganization, migrate the whole Non-Erotic category over there, and I bet there would be a ton of people who are uncomfortable hanging around a porn site but would leap at the chance to write their own Ch.Y.O.A. stories if it was on a nice, clean, family friendly, site. After all, one thing done and that done well, eh?

    Just a thought...

    I don't agree with that.
I sometimes add stories without reading a single chapter, just because of the Title or Synopsis.
"Watching" stories (for different reasons) can be another reason, not to up-vote.

I like the ideas of additional awards.
Other things, I could imagine as award:
    - writing comments
    - liking chapters
    - contributing to other writers stories
(the first two could help the issue in this thread)

Oh, just remembered something else: I have a story I have been doing that's more of a game, but to do things properly I need a way, other than resetting the game: to REMOVE conditions: I don't mean make the condition be X=Untrue, but rather to take it off the list entirely! Though I have not reached that point in the story there will be times when you might basically have to go back to the beginning and start over, Except sort of not, because you will have accomplished certain things that efect what happens later. At this point I am already running 20-30 variables in some strings, and it would be a nightmare to try to work with most of them being reset to X=Untrue just from a clutter perspective... (It's based on Pathfinder, one of the most intricate and nuanced RPG systems ever made...)

I was wondering if it would be possible to make numerical variables stand out a bit more.

Compared to the whole bar that the percentage variable gets and the large, bold checkmark or X that the other variable gets. The Numerical variables just simply do not stand out very well. Especially when next to the other two variables. I don't know if it simply needs bolded or a larger font or both, but I feel like something needs to be done to make them stand out a little better.
