I gave a very brief thought on their background when I was creating Dustin and Shawn, I'll attempt to explain it here. Their father is slightly rich, not as much as Heather's family for a long shot, but he is, and he's a very traditional man who rules the family with an iron fist and believes his wife should stay at home taking care of the house; he also has a really authoritative attitude towards the people who work for him and the ones he sees as being beneath him. Ok, that said, let's focus on Shawn and Dustin. From a very early age, Shawn has watched his father treat other people harshly, seeing them as mere instruments, and he grew up thinking that was how he should be. As for Dustin, he ended up flocking to his kind, submissive mother's side, so he had her as a role model instead of his father, who always belittled him for not acting like his older brother (on here Patzo was right, Dustin isn't too much comfortable with compliments). Shawn's attitude towards women and sex had its origin when he was going through puberty and spied on his dad having sex with his mother, but caring only about his pleasure, using her as an object; the image got etched into his brain, and seeing as he always idolized his father, he believed that was how he should treat women as well. When Dustin decided to take a year off after high school so he could wait for Victoria to graduate, his father wasn't too impressed. He works for people richer than him and took advantage of the fact that a promotion at another city was offered to him to separate his son from the girl who stopped him from going to college straight after high school. Dustin and Shawn never really bonded, it was always a struggle between the dad's side and the mom's side, but at the end of the day, all of them were submissive to the father. And that's it, I guess, that's the version I keep in mind when writing my main thread.
I think we're on the right track guys, and I think both of you fit very well with each other, so let me attempt to synthesize a history: The Lewis family, much like the rest of our character's families, are at least upper-middle class, not rich enough for a cabin in the woods but more than enough to grant their children a good education. This was something highly important to both Mom and Dad, but for different reasons. Dad, being the traditional, authoritarian, emotionally-distant father figure, wanted both of his valued sons to follow his path to success, demanding nothing less than excellent grades from the finest school in the district. Mom, the more relaxed parent by comparison but just as adamant, wanted their children to be well-rounded, confident individuals but with a level of compassion and understanding that their father doesn't possess, or at least has a natural inclination to deny or subvert. At the end of the day however, despite their different reasons, the end goal would be the same. Neither got what they wanted. Shawn, being shy and diffident, was relentlessly bullied at school, until he decided to fight back. Dad supported that given his predilections in life, treating his employees and Mom as less-than-equals, and never provided a role model to Shawn otherwise. Then Shawn's attitudes became cemented after catching his parents in fragrante delicto, with Dad's sexual needs being paramount over Mom's. Like any kid with their parents though, he craved attention, and he demanded Dad over Mom because her opinions were, naturally since she was a woman, less important than Dad's. But Dad was never into parenting in the first place, so conservations with him fell on deaf ears at best, and angry shouting matches at worst. His tantrums were the result of seeking this attention, and he became a pariah within his own family. His journey was complete after diving head-first into the land of PUAs, where, as Patzo excellently put it, "seduction is a struggle for women against other men, even theoretical men he's never met and will never meet." Kendra eventually became his ultimate weapon in this imagined struggle, and he fashioned her through a series of self-esteem put-downs and emotional manipulation. He's smart enough to create those tools, but is arrogant and heavy-handed in his execution. In short, he's never been an expert at this and I don't think ever could be, but he's good enough for government work. (Based on all of this, I totally understand what you were getting at with Shawn, Patzo -- he is an underdeveloped child and fear dominates his inner monologue. Fear of loss of control, because if he's not in charge, nothing ever goes his way. That doesn't engender violence as much as it would cause him to flee, i.e., if he didn't think he could exert any influence over the orgy, he would've left a long time ago.) Dustin came closest to Mom's ideal, but as controlling Shawn became a losing battle, she never had any time for him and Dustin, effectively, raised himself. He never really sought attention from either parent, but, encouraged by them, he saw reading and studying as an escape from the raging nightmare his home life slowly became. Books are portals to other realms, and he dived into each and every one he could find. (Ironically, I can see The Chronicles of Narnia being one of his favorite books series for that reason.) He would spend much of his time at the library, and maybe even had a part time job when he was old enough, and developed into a resigned stoic, but without much confidence in himself. Any kind of attention he received from Dad mutated into a back-handed compliment, and though Mom was usually the person he sought when problems arose in his life, she was drained after having to fight Shawn all day by herself, and so her parenting was inconsistent. Some days she'd have the energy, but many others he head rang far too much. That made Dustin turn more towards reading as a guide to his life, and I'm sure a literary encounter or two with Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens eventually lead him down a path of discarded faiths. ("Besides, couldn't a supreme, benevolent deity provide some help to my terror of a brother?") Meeting Victoria changed everything however. For the first time, Dustin had someone in his life that wasn't aloof, nasty, or entrenched in something else, and her parents were everything he ever wanted in a family. He found some kind of peace, with a someone he could honestly say he loved, a caring mother figure, and even friendly and intellectual banter with Victoria's very religious, reverend father. He even wanted to wait for her as she finished high school, but then his family decided to move. (Dad's hand-waved explanation being a promotion, but it served to both assert some control over the household and his profession in his mind. Control was his only reason for doing anything, and another unwelcome trait that Shawn acquired.) Dustin sensed it all falling apart. His own insecurities crept in again, and as much as he did love Victoria, she was an only child in a rather sheltered life, and began to idolize him. He shirked from that, either due to internalizing Dad's attitude toward him or the general feeling that he needed to guard his feelings against the world. Either way, his excuse was that he wanted to spare Victoria her feelings. and that dream ended for him. Her candle was still lit though in his mind, and upon meeting her again, it roared into life once more. Thoughts, feelings, concerns, drastic changes?
Perfect, filled out all that needed to be filled on the backstory I've mentioned. We can go with that. We can draw a conclusion on Victoria here as well. Based on how she viewed Dustin and Zack on my main thread, we can ascertain she tends to idolize the guys she focus on. Maybe a mirror from her parents' relationship, where her mother is devoted to her father, but in a completely different way than Dustin's parents.
I was wondering about something. I know there have been threads exploring Taylor and Peter's relationship (the most recent one being in the orgy thread), but have there been any threads which have stated the back story of their relationship? I just want to understand so I can maybe throw out a possible sex scene between the two during an orgy AU.
That's a pairing that hasn't been too much focused on. Their relationship is a lot like Zack and Chloe's, although they haven't been friends for that long, they've met when both of them were around ten or eleven years old.
That makes it a bit easier. I have a bit of an easier time with childhood relationships turning into something more. One of my major questions is have they ever had or ever talked about having sex with each other. With neither of them having the same hangups as Chloe and Zack, and having two years more experience than them, I would figure it would come up especially after Peter and Hannah broke up. One idea I've had for a sex scene between the two is for Shawn to dare Taylor to give Peter a blowhole in order to get the Truth or Dare game going into an orgy. One thing about Kendra I'd like to say is that she, at least on my main thread, hates the way Shawn treats her, but she can't break away because she somewhat loves him and that in turn causes her to be submissive towards him. On my storyline, you'll see her undermining Shawn's plan regarding Victoria in a more subtle way (I'm working on that scene and the others that happen during the BBQ), and then later Kurt will be instrumental on helping her break the toxic relationship she has with Shawn. About Lisa, I see her parents as being Americans, but both of them having Mexican, Cuban or Puerto Rican parents (or some nearby country), they've met in a place where Latin American people and their descendants hang out in Azure Rocks. That said, she would've learned to speak the kind of Spanish used in Latin America.

And I can see Carlos as an older, slightly hangdog Desi Arnaz. A fun fact, I've originally conceived Azure Rocks with a beach, but then I figured that with both a large park and a beach it'd make it too much of a magnet for tourists. But then again, it could've been fun, to see random, different characters popping up in town.

The only way this would work was if Peter isn't aware he likes Taylor and then has an epiphany in which she's everything he ever wanted in a girl, or something like that.
